Free QR Code Generator
Type a link or any text and get a QR code you can download as SVG or PNG. It is made in your browser and never expires.

Example Calculation
Enter https://tidymath.com and the generator draws a QR code that opens that address when a phone camera scans it. You can also encode plain text, a phone number or a Wi-Fi login.
Before you print one, test it with two different phones. Leave a quiet white border around it, keep a strong contrast between the dark and light parts, and do not shrink it below about 2 cm (0.8 in) if it will be scanned from a short distance.
How It Works
A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that phones can scan with the camera. This free QR code generator encodes any text — a website address, a phone number, an email, a Wi-Fi login or plain words — into a QR code that you can download and use on flyers, menus, business cards or packaging. Codes are generated entirely in your browser using our own encoder, with no external libraries and no account.
The generator picks the smallest QR “version” (grid size) that can hold your data. A short URL produces a compact code with fewer squares that scans easily from a distance, while very long text creates a denser code. The error correction level controls how much of the code can be damaged or covered and still scan: Low recovers about 7% of data, Medium 15%, Quartile 25% and High 30%. Higher correction is useful for printed materials that may get scuffed, but it makes the code larger.
Use the color pickers to match your brand, but keep strong contrast: a dark foreground on a light background scans most reliably, and inverted or low-contrast codes may fail on some scanners. Keep the quiet zone — the empty margin around the code — at four modules or more. Download the SVG for print, since it stays sharp at any size, or the PNG for quick use on web pages and slides.
Before printing hundreds of copies, always test the code with more than one phone, at the actual size and from the distance people will scan it. As a rule of thumb, make the code at least 0.8 inches (2 cm) wide, and larger for posters. Static codes like these never expire and do not track scans, because the destination is encoded directly in the pattern.
Formula Explained
The text is converted to UTF-8 bytes, padded, protected with Reed–Solomon error-correction codewords over GF(256), interleaved in blocks and placed in the grid with finder, timing and alignment patterns. The best of eight mask patterns is chosen to minimize hard-to-scan areas.
Assumptions and limits
- The code is generated in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and the code never expires because the content is inside the pattern.
- It is a static code: it cannot be edited later and it does not track scans.
- Higher error correction survives more damage but makes the code larger. Test the printed code with more than one phone at the size and distance it will be scanned.
- The code follows the QR Code standard (ISO/IEC 18004). Very long text does not fit and the tool will say so.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the QR code generator free?
Yes, with no sign-up, no limits and no expiry.
Do the QR codes expire?
No. These are static codes that encode your data directly, so they work as long as your destination does.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. The code is generated entirely in your browser.
What is error correction?
Extra data that lets a scanner read the code even if part of it is dirty or covered. Higher levels tolerate more damage.
Which format should I download?
SVG for printing at any size; PNG for quick web and slide use.
What size should a printed QR code be?
At least 0.8 inches (2 cm) square for close scanning, larger for distance, such as posters.
Can I change the colors?
Yes, but keep a dark foreground on a light background for the most reliable scanning.
Can I make a Wi-Fi QR code?
Yes. Enter text in the format WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:Password;; and scan it with a phone camera.
Think a number is wrong? Tell me what you typed and what you expected, and I will check it.
Methodology and sources
The text is encoded as bytes, split into blocks, protected with Reed-Solomon error correction at the level you choose, and placed in the grid with finder, timing and alignment patterns. The best of the eight mask patterns is chosen to make the code easy to scan.
