How It Works
Tipping in the United States is a significant part of service workers’ income, and doing the math quickly at the table is not always easy. This tip calculator takes your pre-tip bill, the percentage you want to leave and the number of people sharing the check, and instantly shows the tip amount, the grand total and each person’s share.
Use the quick buttons for common percentages — 15%, 18%, 20% and 25% — or type any value you like. If you want clean numbers, check the “round up” option and the calculator will round each person’s total up to the next whole dollar, adjusting the tip accordingly so the total covers the check. This is handy when splitting with cash.
A few etiquette notes help you decide how much to tip. At full-service restaurants, 15% to 20% is typical, with 20% or more for excellent service. Check your receipt first, because many restaurants automatically add a gratuity for large parties. Some people calculate the tip on the pre-tax amount, which is perfectly acceptable; if you prefer to tip on the total including tax, add the tax to the bill amount.
For other services, common ranges are 15–20% for hair stylists and taxi or rideshare drivers, $1–$2 per drink at bars, and $2–$5 per day for housekeeping. Tip jars and counter-service prompts are optional. When the service was truly poor, consider speaking with a manager rather than leaving nothing. Our full guide to US tipping etiquette goes into more detail on who to tip and how much.
Formula Explained
Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100
Total = bill + tip; Per person = total ÷ people (optionally rounded up).
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
15–20% is customary for table service in the US, with 20% or more for excellent service.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is acceptable. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal; tipping on the total is slightly more generous.
Is an automatic gratuity included for large groups?
Often yes, commonly 18–20% for parties of six or more. Check your receipt to avoid double tipping.
How do I split a bill unevenly?
Calculate each person’s own items plus a share of tax and tip, or use this tool for an even split and adjust manually.
Do I tip on takeout?
It is optional. Many people leave 10% or a few dollars for large or complicated orders.
How much should I tip delivery drivers?
Typically 15–20% with a minimum of a few dollars, more in bad weather or for long distances.
What does rounding up do?
It rounds each person’s total up to the next dollar, which simplifies cash payments and slightly increases the tip.
Does this work for other currencies?
The math works for any currency, but tipping customs differ by country.
